Marvel taps Roel Reiné to direct first two episodes of The Inhumans

January 20, 2017 by Justin Cook

Later this year, The Inhumans will be coming to televisions across the world, but before it does that, Marvel and ABC will be releasing the first two episodes in IMAX theaters. Yesterday, the companies took a major step forward in bringing the show to fruition by hiring Roel Reiné, an out-of-the-box choice, to helm the series premiere and subsequent episode.

When it comes to directors, Reiné isn’t nearly as well known as many of those who have wandered into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, but he certainly has experience aplenty. Reiné has over 30 directing credits to his name, including work on such straight-to-video features as The Marine 2, Death Race 2, The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption, 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded and The Man with the Iron Fists 2 and TV shows as Black Sails and Blood Drive. Most of his work hasn’t exactly been lauded by critics, but when you’re tasked with churning out multiple sequels to mediocre action films with ten times the budget and more capable talent, you can’t always deliver.

Undoubtedly, Reiné has the biggest responsibility out of any other director who Marvel may eventually tap for the project. Not only does he have to establish the tone for the show and engage viewers so they come back for more, but he also has to shoot footage that will be worth fans dishing out their hard-earned dollars to see in IMAX.

Expect to see The Inhumans hit over 1,000 screens over Labor Day weekend before it premieres on ABC later in September. Scott Buck (Dexter, Iron Fist) will serve as showrunner on The Inhumans.
