Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again is at “day zero”, say new directors

November 14, 2023 by Ricky Church

As Marvel Studios enters a period of uncertainty with the lacklustre opening of The Marvels among its perceived pitfalls this year but stellar season of Loki, coupled with Jonathan Majors’ looming trial and whether or not he will return as Kang The Conqueror, one project that has added to that uncertainty has been the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

Daredevil: Born Again, which was to feature Charlie Cox reprising his Netflix role as the Man Without Fear after his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk, had already begun filming but was forced to halt production when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began but was recently announced to undergo a complete retooling with writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman taken off the series and replaced with Dario Scardapane as showrunner and Loki directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead directing the series.

The story for Daredevil: Born Again has been completely scrapped and the episodes, which less than half of its 18-episode order were filmed, will be reworked with some footage and story elements remaining while a new story is made. Born Again is quite literally going through a rebirth of its own as Benson and and Moorhead said they are starting at “day zero” for the series.

In an interview with TheWrap, the duo revealed they are going back to the drawing board as they prepare to film the remainder of the season as well as new material for the episodes that have already been shot.

“We have the best answer for you. So you see this space we’re in right now? This is our office and we just found out we have an office about 45 minutes ago,” Benson joked. “And that’s what we’re at with Daredevil.”

“It is day zero,” Moorhead said. “We’re currently just consuming Daredevil content, not just the Netflix show but all the possible material. We’re just making our stew of information nice and thick.”

One of the objectives Marvel wishes to achieve as Born Again is reworked is to capture more of the feel and tone of the original Netflix series which ran for three seasons as well as Cox’s role in the limited crossover The Defenders. Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, who starred alongside Cox in the Netflix series as his partners and friends Karen Page and Foggy Nelson respectively, were not cast in Born Again while Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal were and still will reprise their roles as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and The Punisher. Sandrine Holt (The Aviary) had also been cast as Vanessa Fisk, taking over from Ayelet Zurer in the Netflix series.

Daredevil: Born Again was slated for 2024, but currently has no release date in sight. It will likely not premiere for some time as Marvel, Scardapane, Benson and Moorhead rework the entire series.
