Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video delves into the game’s music and original ‘Star-Lord’ album

August 20, 2021 by Andrew Newton

Eidos-Montréal has released a new developer video for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy giving a behind the scenes look at the creation of the game’s music and its melding of 80’s pop and rock masterpieces.

Today’s developer video, hosted by Steve Szczepkowski, Senior Audio Director, describes how the team have brought together three distinct musical styles in its soundtrack, including an orchestral score, a mixtape of licensed ’80s tracks and an original rock album created specifically for the game.  All three fuse together to create a truly unique musical score.

When choosing the licensed music for the game, Steve explains how the aim was to transport players back to the ’80s with a selection of hit songs from the likes of Iron Maiden, KISS, New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley, Hot Chocolate and more.

Meanwhile, in the game’s narrative, Peter Quill has taken the name Star-Lord from his favourite 80s rock band and Steve and company have also recorded an entire album as Star-Lord just for the game with original tracks that reflect the nature of the Guardians themselves. Here’s the cover artwork to the faux album ‘Space Rider’…

Steve Szczepkowski says: “Music is intrinsic to the Guardians’ franchise, and we wanted to make it focal to the gameplay experience. The soundtrack is infused in the DNA of the game, and our use of it goes far beyond usual expectations. Whether it’s powering up combat in the Huddle or bringing Star-Lord’s favourite band to life, every element was carefully woven into the lore to enhance the story of this rock and roll band of misfits.”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy includes a unique Huddle feature that allows players to press play on Star-Lord’s Cassette Player for a particular ’80s hit that will spur the Guardians on while fighting.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be available on PC and consoles on 26th October.
