Mel Gibson sues Voltage Pictures over The Professor and the Madman

August 1, 2017 by Samuel Brace

A lawsuit has been filed by Mel Gibson against Voltage Pictures over the movie The Professor and the Madman.

The movie, which revolves around the creation of the Oxford Dictionary, has been in development by Gibson for years. Based on the book by Simon Winchester, the film sees Gibson as the professor, James Murray – the man that oversaw the dictionary’s creation – and Sean Penn as the madman, William Chester Minor, who provided 10,000 entries from a mental asylum.

Alleging that Voltage has breached its producing agreements, Gibson claims that the company refused to allow important scenes to be filmed in Oxford, England. Gibson also alleges that Voltage didn’t develop a final budget for the film, failed to secure a completion bond, and didn’t complete an agreement with the director, Farhad Safinia.

Additionally, Gibson alleges that his production company was not reimbursed for its expenses, hasn’t been paid its full producer fee, and, among other things, that Voltage violated Gibson’s right to select the final cut of the movie.

All isn’t well, it would seem.
