Melissa Barrera is okay with where she left things in Scream

April 16, 2024 by EJ Moreno

We know Melissa Barrera had a rocky road in 2024. After being fired from Scream VII, which caused that film to have a massive ripple effect, she’s faced some backlash in Hollywood.

But one thing about the horror final girl, she’s stayed strong in the face of adverisity. And she seems to be okay with how things have worked out, especially with the narrative of her character Sam Carpenter in Scream and 2023’s Scream VI.

While appearing on Perri Nemiroff’s Ladies Night, Barrera reveals her mindset regarding her place in Scream, stating: “I feel like the ending of [Scream VI] was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like “Ugh, I got left in the middle.” No, I think people, the fans, were wanting a third movie to continue that arc, and apparently, the plan was a trilogy, even though I was only contracted for two movies. So, I did my two movies, and I’m fine. I’m good with that. I got two – that’s more than most people get.”

As for what she wants to do now, the actress remains positive and keeps pushing forward. Barrera says that she’s “just continuing to put myself out there. Unafraid. Because I’m here to stay. [Laughs] So, just continuing to audition — I still have a lot of things that I wanna do. I have a lot of dreams that I want to accomplish — a lot of different movies that I want to do.”

Scream is reshaping its story with an all-new entry, Scream VII, which will be helmed by Kevin Williamson. Neve Campbell is set to return for the new installment alongside Courteney Cox. Meanwhile, you can find Melissa Barrera in Abigail in theaters this week…

After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.

Abigail features a cast that includes Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, and Alisha Weir.

Abigail arrives in cinemas on April 19th.
