Melissa Benoist talks pressure and excitement for Supergirl

February 25, 2015 by James Garcia

Melissa Benoist will soon be suiting up as the Last Daughter of Krypton on CBS’ upcoming Supergirl TV series, and, as expected, is feel pretty excited and pressured about the opportunity. In a new interview with Comic Book Resources, the Glee and Whiplash actress talked a bit about what we can expect from her approach to the character of Kara Zor-El:

“What’s so wonderful about her is that she is such a relatable character, amongst her powers. What I’m most excited about is telling a story about a human being really realizing their potential and strength, and I think that’s something that everyone will root for and want in their own lives – I’m really excited about that.”

When asked if she’d been doing any reading to prepare the role, Benoist said:

“It’s a little daunting. It’s daunting, but that’s good. I like being pushed. I work well under pressure.”

And finally, Benoist opened up about her own excitement for the role:

“I think if you told my five-year-old self that all this would be happening in this period of time, I would not have believed you! Because it’s been really wonderful. I feel so privileged to be working and doing what I’ve always loved to do since I was four years old…I’m a little overwhelmed by it, to be honest.”

Supergirl has a series commitment from CBS and is expected to air this fall. It stars Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks (True Blood) as Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti (Nashville) as Alura Zor-El, and Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal, Brothers & Sisters) as Cat Grant. Superman will also appear in the series, as evidenced by a new casting call.
