Michael B. Jordan on moving away from Rocky with Creed III

December 24, 2022 by EJ Moreno

As we look ahead to Creed III, the filmmaker/star of the film has been addressing its upcoming new era as Michael B. Jordan steps outside of the boxing ring to helm the latest Creed movie, which is a spin-off of the Rocky franchise.

This entry will mark the first time creator Sylvester Stallone will not be involved with an entry in the series, and in a new interview with Total Film, Jordan says the new film will see a five-year time jump, with Adonis at a pivotal time well into his professional career.

Jordan says the whole point is to respect the past but move the franchise forward. “We wouldn’t have Donnie without Rocky, and he will always be a pillar in Donnie’s life, but Creed III is really the dawn of a new era for the franchise and the character,” says Jordan. “It was really important from a storytelling perspective to get to a pivotal point in Donnie’s career a few years down the line where he has really established himself with his professional career and his family.”

In a different interview, Jordan told Total Film that the latest film represents an evolution, with Adonis using the teachings of Rocky.

“It’s really diving into the Creed universe and having him evolve, start his own family and go through his own trials and tribulations in life, Jordan tells Total Film. “It’s allowed Adonis to stand on his own two feet and use the wisdom he’s learned from Rocky in the other two films.”

No matter how you look at it, first-time director Michael B. Jordan looks to make a big splash with Creed III, which opens this coming March. Let us know if you’re excited for this new chapter of the franchise in our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

After dominating the boxing world, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has been thriving in both his career and family life. When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian (Jonathan Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he is eager to prove that he deserves his shot in the ring. The face off between former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line to battle Damian – a fighter who has nothing to lose.

Creed III features a cast that includes Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris, Florian Munteanu, Tony Bellew, Canelo Alvarez, Selenis Leyva, and Mila Davis-Kent.

Creed III arrives in cinemas on March 3rd, 2023.
