Michael Fassbender signs up for feature-length sequel to viral short Kung Fury

February 12, 2018 by Tom Beasley

Michael Fassbender has signed on for a rather unlikely project, as the star of Kung Fury, which is a sequel to a 30-minute viral short produced with the aid of Kickstarter backers.

Fassbender will star in the new action-comedy alongside actor-director David Sandberg and cult icon David Hasselhoff, who appeared in the original short and sang its theme tune.

Variety reports that the film will be set in a 1985 Miami kept safe by the Thundercops police force, led by the titular cop. The group disbands after the death of an officer, which leaves the way free for a villain to rise in search of the ultimate weapon.

The original short, which is a pastiche of 1980s cop shows, hit the internet in 2015 after raising more than $600,000 on Kickstarter and was selected to compete as part of Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

As is the way with these sorts of things, Kung Fury has since developed a cult following, which is no doubt what has attracted Fassbender to this big screen take on the material.
