Michael Keaton says returning as Batman for The Flash was “a little bit emotional”

August 12, 2021 by EJ Moreno

It’s been 29 years since Michael Keaton played Batman, and after nearly three decades, the actor is finally returning to the role in the upcoming DC film The Flash.

Through timeline madness, Keaton will join Ezra Miller’s Flash in mayhem and madness that will surely break the DC multiverse. He’ll also feature alongside another Batman as Ben Affleck is set to reprise his role as the DC Extended Universe’s Dark Knight.

In a recent interview with Collider, Keaton opened up about returning as the Caped Crusader, calling it “emotional” and teasing the first shot of Batman in the film.

“[It was] weirdly and ironically easy. A little bit emotional. Just a rush of memories. Without giving anything away, which I can’t, basically the first shot, not of the entire movie but let’s say the introduction [of Batman], is so good that when we walked on and started talking about a couple of shots and the angles, I went ‘whoa, this is big. This is great.’ I don’t even mean for me. Just the imagery, it’s great. And reminiscent, to some degree, of Tim Burton.”

The Flash will see the return of Ezra Miller as Barry Allen alongside Zack Snyder’s Justice League co-stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, while Batman and Batman Returns’ Michael Keaton also reprises the role of The Dark Knight. DCEU newcomers include Ron Livingston (Office Space) as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdu (Pan’s Labyrinth) as Nora Allen, and Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless) as Supergirl.

The Flash is set for release on November 4th 2022.
