Millie Gibson exiting Doctor Who with Varada Sethu set as new companion

January 21, 2024 by Gary Collinson

In news that has taken the fan community by surprise, The Daily Mirror has revealed that Millie Gibson is set to exit her role Doctor Who as Ruby Sunday after just a single season, with Varada Sethu (Star Wars: Andor) set to take over as a new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.

According to the tabloid’s report, the decision to drop Gibson’s Ruby Sunday was made by showrunner Russell T. Davies, with a source reportedly revealing that “Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.”

Speaking about Varada Sethu’s as-yet-unnamed new companion, The Mirror’s source went on to add that: “Varada is a real gem, Russell was just blown away by her talent. The cast and crew have really warmed to her and he’s sure the fans will too.”

Millie Gibson made her debut as Ruby Sunday in last month’s Christmas Special, and will reportedly exit the series during the upcoming “first” season, set to premiere in May [watch the trailer here]. She is not expected to appear in the next Christmas Special.

Doctor Who is set to return with its new series in May.
