Minions fends off Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th July 2015…

Universal’s animated Despicable Me spinoff Minions held on to first place at the UK box office in its second weekend, comfortably fending off competition from new arrivals Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL to top the chart with £6.24 million.

Despite near-universally negative reviews, Terminator Genisys opened with a decent £3,793,617 to claim second place, with Magic Mike XXL having to settle for fourth behind Jurassic World with an opening weekend of £1,575,092.

Meanwhile, Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary Amy pulled in £523,192 in fifth place, enjoying the biggest ever opening for a British documentary, and the second biggest for a non-concert doc behind Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.

3. Jurassic World – £2,610,612 weekend (4 weeks)

6. Spy – £304,610 weekend (5 weeks)
7. Secret Cinema – Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back – £293,275 weekend (5 weeks)
8. Guillaume Tell – Royal Opera – £114,673 weekend (New)
9. Mr. Holmes – £113,635 weekend (3 weeks)
10.  Knock Knock – £66,685 weekend (2 weeks)

Incoming…

Today sees the release of the Seth MacFarlane comedy sequel Ted 2 [read our review here], while Friday’s newcomers include Song of the Sea, Love & Mercy, Dear White People and The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence), along with a reissue of Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil.
