Get your quirks ready as we enter the world of My Hero Academia like never before as Netflix is tackling a live-action film adaptation of the manga and anime series, which will come from Legendary Entertainment.
Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato will make his English-language debut with the project, helming a script from screenwriter Joby Harold. Sato was hired last year, and he’s best known for helming other anime projects like a Bleach film and a Death Note feature. Harold’s credits include Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead for Netflix.
While Netflix isn’t new to the world of anime, they’ve tackled Death Note and will soon release a One Piece adaptation; this is their first time venturing into the My Hero Academia universe. But Legendary Entertainment has been brewing this for quite some time; they bought the rights to a live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia in October 2018.
My Hero Academia follows Izuku, a young boy who lives in a world where 80% of the popular have a superpower – or ‘quirk’ – and dreams of being a superhero, only for him to fall under the 20% of people with no special abilities. Nevertheless, he looks to defy the odds by enrolling into one of the world’s most prestigious and intimidating hero academies, where he struggles for acceptance and is forced to face challenges that require him to risk everything to prove himself to be truly special.

Who will star as the iconic Izuku and All Might? The Hollywood Reporter notes that casting has not yet begun, but it “may attract a host of Japanese American actors.” Only time will tell, but some eager fans will await those announcements.
