Nathan Fillion discusses his deleted cameo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

June 16, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Although Nathan Fillion was cast as actor Simon Williams – better known to comic book fans as Wonder Man – in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, his cameo ended up on the cutting room floor. Nevertheless, writer-director James Gunn has expressed his hope of seeing Fillion’s Williams in the MCU at some point in the future, and now the actor has echoed that sentiment during a chat with The Ara Radio Show (via CBR) during which he discussed the deleted cameo.

“I was going to be an Easter egg in the background…[there was] a Simon Williams Film Festival, and I was in all of the movie posters,” said Fillion. “If you know the Marvel Universe, Simon Williams becomes Wonder Man, becomes an Avenger. So, he’s part of that universe. It was a neat little Easter egg, it was a neat little piece of the universe. It didn’t get into the movie. That’s fine. That happens all the time. I still had the same wonderful experience. But moving forward, I don’t know, let me see what we can do with this opportunity. That’s just a cleverly disguised opportunity. Am I right?”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sees director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Laura Haddock (Meredith Quill) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface, Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Tullk and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) as Stakar.
