Netflix acquires video game adaptation The Division starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain

June 13, 2019 by Gary Collinson

During Ubisoft’s panel at E3, the publisher has announced that its long-gestating feature film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division has been acquired by streaming giant Netflix.

David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) is set to direct The Division, which has Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Jessica Chastain (It: Chapter Two) attached to star, as well as producing through their Nine Stories and Freckle Films banners respectively.

As per Deadline, The Division “takes place in the near future where a pandemic virus is spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the city of New York and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.”

The Division video game was released in 2016, and proved to be a huge hit for Ubisoft, toppling Watch Dogs to become its biggest seller. A sequel followed in March of this year.
