New Line presses play on Mortal Kombat sequel

January 27, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

New Line’s Mortal Kombat reboot was one of the first of Warner Bros. day-and-date HBO Max releases during the height of the pandemic, and while reviews were as tepid as Sub-Zero, and box-office understandably middling ($83M worldwide), there was obviously enough there for them not to K.O. the franchise, because news has emerged that Moon Knight‘s head writer Jeremy Slater has been tasked with creating a sequel.

According to Deadline, New Line have hired Slater to continue the action-adventure videogame adaptation, which despite the caveats of its release was ranked among the studios top performing titles on their HBO Max streaming service, beating the likes of Dune and The Suicide Squad.

As well as writing duties on forthcoming Disney+ small-screen blockbuster Moon Knight, Slater has also developed The Umbrella Academy for Netflix, and adapted Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers for Universal.

Mortal Kombat starred Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; Laura Brent as Allison Young; and Daniel Nelson as Kabal. There is now word yet on whether any of the cast will return to resume their roles as ass-kicking avatars in the sequel.
