New live-action Asterix & Obelix movie in the works

October 31, 2019 by Gary Collinson

The iconic French comic book characters Asterix and Obelix are heading back to the big screen for a new live-action adventure, with French filmmaker and actor Guillaume Canet set to helm the new movie Asterix & Obelix: The Silk Road, as well as taking on the role of Asterix alongside Gilles Lellouche as Obelix. Here’s a first look at the two actors in costume as the title characters…

The Silk Road is based upon an original story from Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé and will see Asterix and Obelix heading to China on a new adventure. Production is expected to get underway in early 2020.

This of course won’t be the first live-action outing for the duo, as Christian Clavier and Gerard Depardieu brought the characters to life in 1999’s Asterix & Obelix Take on Ceasar and returned for the sequels Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra in 2002 and Asterix at the Olympic Games in 2008. Depardieu also returned as Obelix for 2012’s Asterix & Obelix: God Save Brittannia, with Edouard Baer portraying Asterix.

The franchise’s most recent feature, the animated movie Asterix: The Secret Of The Magic Potion, was released in 2018.
