Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective began in 2014 as a limited series with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives who investigated a brutal murder over the course of decades. The series then became an anthology focusing on a new pair of detectives solving a new case in a different setting while examining their damaged personal lives.
Pizzolatto’s run initially ran for three seasons with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams leading season two followed by Mahersherala Ali and Stephen Dorff for the third. The series was revived in 2024 for the fourth season titled True Detective: Night Country led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, but this time with Issa López as the showrunner and writer without Pizzolatto’s involvement.
López will again serve as showrunner for the upcoming season for a 2027 production. While story details are being kept under wraps HBO revealed Cage will star as detective Henry Logan with Banderas as Rai Garcia in Jamaica Bay, New York. López will write and direct as well as executive produce alongside Cage, Banderas, Pizzolatto, Harrelson, McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Cage most recently starred in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, his first TV series in his career which was cancelled after its first season, while Banderas has starred in three films this year with Above and Below, Tony and Up Against It. Cage will soon be seen on the big screen again in Madden as NFL legend John Madden and Lords of War, the sequel to the 2005 action drama Lord of War, and is reprising his voice role as Spider-Noir in Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse.
