Obi-Wan Kenobi series to use same revolutionary visual effects as The Mandalorian says Ewan McGregor

June 17, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Ewan McGrgor, the star of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, says the show will make use of The Mandalorian’s revolutionary visual effects technology.

The behind the scenes documentaries for The Mandalorian have revealed the new visual effects technology that was pioneered under showrunner Jon Favreau. Called virtual production, environments and locations are rendered on the soundstage, blended with practical effects, meaning that they could film in multiple ‘locations’ on the same day without having to use blue or green screen.

It looks like Lucasfilm is going to make sure of this very useful technology once more for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Ewan McGregor discussed the technology in relation to his work on the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy with ACE Nation:

“[The prequels] were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set. I don’t know if you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes of The Mandalorian series, but they employ that incredible screen…it’s pretty amazing. It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us, as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”

If this technology is going to help the actors with their own performances like McGregor says, hopefully he will take his role as Obi-Wan to a whole new level in the series. It will certainly be something for Star Wars fans to look forward to.
