Paramount enlists screenwriters for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins follow-up

May 3, 2020 by Gary Collinson

It doesn’t seem like Paramount and Hasbro are messing around with their upcoming reboot of the G.I. Joe franchise, with THR reporting that Seberg writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have signed up to script a follow-up to the upcoming Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins.

According to the site, the new movie will not be a direct sequel to Snake Eyes as such, “but rather an expansion to take audience goers deeper into the world of Joe.” Shrapnel and Waterhouse will pen the screenplay, having provided uncredited production polishing on the script for Snake Eyes, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura is returning as producer.

The new Snake Eyes film is intended to reboot the G.I. Joe movie series, and sees Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding taking on the role of the fan favourite ninja commando in an origin story.

Given that Paramount and Hasbro appear keen to further explore this new continuity, it would seem the long-planned G.I. Joe 3 – which would have reportedly seen the return of Dwayne Johnson (Roadblock), Snake-Eyes (Ray Park), Scarlet (Rachel Nichols) and General Joe Colton (Bruce Willis) – is now K.I.A.

Snake Eyes is being directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D.) from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) and features a cast that includes Henry Golding (Last Christmas) as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji (Warrior) as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais (The Raid) as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist) as The Baroness, Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Scarlett and Haruka Abe (Ideal), Takehiro Hira (Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai), and Steven Allerick (The Expanse) in an as-yet-unrevealed roles.
