Paul Greengrass says his unmade Watchmen film was like Todd Phillips’ Joker

January 7, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Director Paul Greengrass has revealed that his idea for a Watchmen movie would have shared a similar approach as Todd Phillips’ Joker.

Hollywood is full of stories about the films that could have been. Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was a hugely stylistic affair, in keeping with the director’s signature style and approach to filmmaking but that movie could have been very different if The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass got to make the film instead.

When speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Greengrass discussed his pitch for the movie, revealing that it shared similarities with recent hit Joker. Greengrass says his Watchmen would have gone with a more realistic world:

“I wanted to believe these characters lived in the real world and that a lot of what they were thinking and doing was delusional. There was something in Joker that had [a similar] quality to it.”

The director went on to say that he thinks he didn’t get the job partly because he couldn’t properly convey his ideas for the film. Something that would likely have been easier for him if the film was being made after Todd Phillip’s Joker.

Snyder’s version of Watchmen wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but the property has had a second life on screen in the form of HBO’s recent series. Would Greengrass’ version have topped Snyder’s? It’s hard to say but it’s always fun to think about what could have been. Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
