Production start dates for Ghost in the Shell, Avatar 2, Alien: Covenant, Wolverine 3 and Transformers 5

February 1, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Thanks to My Entertainment World, we’ve got details on production start dates for some of 2017’s big hitters.

The Scarlett Johansson-headlined Ghost in the Shell, which is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) will begin filming this month in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai.

Also set to commence production this month is the Fifty Shades of Grey follow-up Fifty Shades Darker, which sees Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson returning as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele alongside new addition Kim Basinger.

The release date of Avatar 2 may have been pushed back due to Star Wars: Episode VIII, but James Cameron will reportedly start shooting the follow-up to the highest-grossing film of all time in New Zealand in April.

Ridley Scott will begin shooting his Prometheus sequel / Alien prequel Alien: Covenant in Sydney, Australia in April, with Michael Fassbender reprising his role from the first movie and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) joining the cast. However, Noomi Rapace will not be back.

Production on Hugh Jackman’s final X-Men outing Wolverine 3 will get underway in April, with Jackman reuniting with The Wolverine helmer James Mangold and fellow X-Men veteran Patrick Stewart. Filming will take place in New Orleans and New Mexico.

And finally, Michael Bay will be back behind the camera for Transformers 5 in May, with the director reuniting with Transformers: Age of Extinction star Mark Wahlberg.
