Quentin Tarantino teams with David Fincher and Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up

April 2, 2025 by EJ Moreno

In many ways, with this news dropping on April 1st, you’d expect it to be a trick, but two of the most significant filmmakers ever are working together.

For every film lover, from the ’90s to modern cinema snobs, the pairing of David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino feels unreal. However, as recently revealed, the duo will team for a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel.

The Playlist first reported on the film, and The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed the story. While Tarantino will not helm the project, he’ll serve as the screenwriter, and Fincher will tackle directorial duties. According to one source close to the production, filming could begin as soon as this summer, with Netflix reportedly involved.

We’ll see iconic fictional TV star Rick Dalton and his loyal stuntman Cliff Booth re-team in the project. Brad Pitt is attached to star, and Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly in talks to reprise his role. Pitt began to circle the project when Tarantino offered him the script and said he could find someone to direct. That’s when the actor said, “Depends on who,” and David Fincher was brought into the mix.

Not only are Fincher and Tarantino both from the new wave of filmmakers in the 1990s, but Pitt and Fincher have worked together on Se7en, Fight Club, The Mysterious Case of Benjamin Button, and World War Z. For all involved, this could be a match made in cinematic heaven.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nominated for ten awards at the 92nd Academy Awards, winning two as Pitt took home Best Supporting Actor. It was praised by critics and fans alike, but some felt it was a bit overindulgent at times. Could Fincher’s keen eye and Tarantino’s bold scripts work together to maximize the amazing potential here?

None of this has been confirmed, but stay tuned to Flickering Myth for updates. Would you like a follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Reach out to us via our social channels @FlickeringMyth and share your thoughts…
