Rian Johnson says Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Luke Skywalker is “100% consistent” with the Original Trilogy

November 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Despite being almost a year on from its release, Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues to be a fiercely-debated topic among fans of the Star Wars franchise.

One of – if not the – most controversial aspects of the movie is the film’s handling of Luke Skywalker – and it’s not just fans who can’t let go of the subject either, as director Rian Johnson has interjected himself into a Twitter dispute about Luke’s characterisation, stating that it is “100% consistent” with the Original Trilogy.

Hot take: Luke is in fact 100% consistent with his character (not the way he’s described in marketing blurbs, but his actual, based-on-his-words-and-actions character) from the OT. I’ll be at the bar if you need me.

Johnson’s comments are unlikely to do much to shift opinion at this point, and it seems clear by now that The Last Jedi is going to remain the most divisive chapter of the Star Wars saga (so far, anyway). However, given that we’ll soon be closer to the release of Episode IX than The Last Jedi – and Johnson has an entire trilogy to be getting on with – maybe it’s time to just move on?

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
