Rian Johnson wants Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery back in cinemas

December 4, 2022 by EJ Moreno

If you’ve seen any of the online chatter for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, most people are full of praise for the sequel. However, a very vocal group is disappointed in its limited theatrical run, and now another voice is joining that argument: the director himself.

Speaking to Insider, Rian Johnson says he is so happy with the Netflix situation and is grateful, but he would love to see more of a cinematic run for his Knives Out sequel.

“Any theaters we can get it into at any point, I’m pushing for,” Johnson told Insider. “I want more people to have the opportunity to be able to watch it.”

He adds that he is uncertain if cinemas will still play the film after its debut on Netflix. “Once it’s on the service, it will be available to theaters, and we’re exploring what form that can take. I’ll take as much as I can possibly get. But a lot of that has to do with what the theaters are willing to do, what makes sense.”

With the little time it spent in the theaters, Johnson is happy with the success and confirms Netflix’s impressive box office numbers.

“We were very interested in how it did,” said the filmmaker. “We wanted it to do incredibly well for a lot of reasons. I guess for me because I really want to show that this can happen and this can be a huge success. And that when it hits the service, people will still turn up, and it will be huge on the service. That those two things can complement each other. Because I want more next time, I want more theaters. I want it for longer.”

Glass Onion impressively earned between $12.7 million and $13 million domestically over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. The original was a fall season hit, so there could be more life with Knives Out in the theaters.

You’re invited to put the pieces together. In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.
