Rian Johnson wouldn’t change a thing about Star Wars: The Last Jedi

January 25, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, says he wouldn’t change anything about the movie.

The Last Jedi has been divisive to say the least, delighting and upsetting fans in seemingly equal measure. The film has still gone on to make huge amounts of cash at the box office but audiences are hardly united on their view of the film.

Despite this, Rian Johnson doesn’t have any regrets but told /Filmcast (via The Playlist) that he had initial doubts after backlash he received on social media:

“The crazy thing is, I had no perspective on these tweets. I had no perspective in terms of how big a group of people this was, even what they were upset about specifically. Over the next few weeks, I was able to contextualize it and feel much better about it. But at the time, I thought, ‘Oh my God, does everybody hate this? Did I totally mess up, was I wrong?’ And I had a very dark hour of the soul…because I had no context for this.”

However, the filmmaker then went on to say: “There’s nothing I’ve read or seen that’s made me think, ‘Oh god, I did kind of mess that up, I would’ve done that differently if I could go back. I still genuinely believe in all the decisions I’ve made.”

It will be interesting to see how, if at all, any of the criticisms towards The Last Jedi impact Johnson’s thinking regarding his new Star Wars trilogy, something we will never really know for sure.
