Ridley Scott talks Alien future in the wake of Disney’s Fox acquisition

January 1, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Although Ridley Scott had previously revealed that he had plans for a host of further Alien sequels, the box office underperformance of Alien: Covenant seemed to throw a spanner in the works, with reports this past summer that 20th Century Fox were looking to “reassess” the franchise.

Of course, as we now know, Fox’s film assets have been purchased by The Walt Disney Company, casting further doubt on the future of the sci-fi horror series. However, Scott believes that Disney would be foolish not to continue the franchise, with the filmmaker telling The Toronto Sun:

“I would like to [continue]; they’re crazy if they don’t. David is a fantastic villain. I love what (Michael Fassbender) did in Covenant. But it’s fucking hard, dude. We lifted Alien out of a ditch and made Prometheus… There’s no reason why Alien should now not be on the same level for fans as Star Trek and Star Wars. So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the Alien (series) with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really.”

Scott has previously stated that his planned sequels would “drift away from the alien stuff” and that he feels “AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting”. However, given the mixed reception to both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, it remains to be seen whether Scott will get the opportunity for a fourth outing in the Alien universe.

Would you like to see Ridley Scott continuing his Alien story? Should Disney hand over the reins to another filmmaker? Or is it time to bring the curtain down on the franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
