The Lighthouse director’s new film The Northman will be “dark and unusually violent”

February 25, 2020 by Liam Waddington

After finding success with The Witch and The Lighthouse, director Robert Eggers is currently working on The Northman, which is described as a Viking revenge tale.

The Northman will see Eggers re-teaming with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jarin Blaschke (The Lighthouse) who has recently teased that the upcoming film will be “dark and unusually violent” during an interview with Screen Daily.

“Rob says very little. It’s a bigger movie than the others,” Blaschke said. “I can say it’s a Viking revenge movie and we are shooting in Europe. I think he feels a responsibility to do a trilogy. It’s dark and unusually violent.”

The film, which has been scripted by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón, is described as “a Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century.”

Specific plot details for The Northman are being kept under wraps, but Eggers has enlisted an incredible cast for the project including Nicole Kidman (Aquaman), Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Bill Skarsgård (It Chapter Two), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), and Claes Bang (Dracula).
