From beasts to the bard. Robert Eggers is set to follow Nosferatu and Werwulf with yet another tale of doomed love in the shape of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Eggers is setting up his take on events in fair Verona at Focus Features, the same studio that has released all of his films, from The Witch through to Werwulf, which howls at the moon this Christmas. Like warring Montagues and Capulets, Focus fought off competition from A24, Sony and Warner Bros to secure this slice of Shakespeare.
The story also reveals that much like his forthcoming werewolf horror, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily Rose Depp, Eggers adaptation of Romeo & Juliet will feature actors speaking in Olde English.
Written in the 1950s, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet tells the tale of forbidden love between two Italian teenagers from feuding families. It has been adapted for stage, both as a musical and opera, while there have been numerous big-screen versions, most notably Franco Zaffirelli’s 1968 film, and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 classic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
