Rumour: Microsoft developing on two upgraded Xbox One consoles

May 27, 2016 by Andrew Newton

There are rumours about some of the secrets that Microsoft may hold in store for a big reveal at this years E3 event, some of which may even overshadow the news about the Playstation Neo.  Perhaps the biggest rumour circulating is said to be the reveal of not just one new console but TWO, with a new Xbox One slim to appear in stores this year and a more formidable beast codenamed ‘Scorpio’ lurking for a 2017 release.

Information circulating at present is that the new Xbox One Slim will be 40% smaller and slightly cheaper than the current machine which may be considered a God send to those with space limitations and a budget but even better news is that it will have a 2TB hard drive which is double the current seller.  It is also said to support 4K as a means for video playback.

The big news however, is the Scorpio and according to an article by gaming website Polygon there are a few details that have been leaked from the confines of Microsoft R & D.  The main feature leaked is to do with the speed of the console. At present the Xbox One operates at 1.32 teraflops whilst the PS4 operates at 1.84 teraflops and the PS ‘Neo’ is rumoured to have peak performance at 4.14 teraflops, but it sounds as though Microsoft have had enough with being the slower competitor and intend to end this with the ‘Scorpio’ having a target of 6 teraflops which is a really impressive improvement in speed.

There is also the rumour of the ‘Scorpio’ being compatible with the Oculus Rift and it appears the console will be capable of supporting it, however, neither company have responded to this and their business relationship doesn’t seem to have changed but if it is true then this could possibly be a big blow to the Playstation VR’s success.

Nobody can say any of this is guaranteed to be the case until Microsoft announce it, we will all just have to wait until E3 and see.

How do you feel about the possibility of a new console released so soon? Do you think Microsoft will reveal this new console at E3 or do you think it won’t happen for a few more years to come? Share your opinions in the comments below.
