SPOILERS: Ryan Coogler talks Black Panther’s surprise post-credits scene cameo

February 17, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Spoilers for the post-credit scene of Black Panther follow…

Given the ending of Captain America: Civil War, which saw Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa agreeing to give Bucky Barnes sanctuary in Wakanda and placing him into stasis, many fans assumed that The Winter Soldier would play a role in the events of Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster Black Panther.

Well, despite actor Sebastian Stan stating that he wouldn’t appear in the movie, which did catch a glimpse of Bucky in the post-credits scene as he wakes up in a house and is greeted by T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright). And, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, director Ryan Coogler has revealed how the cameo came about:

“Obviously, it ties in [with Avengers: Infinity War], but the studio didn’t force our hand or tell us what the post-credits scene should be,” said Coogler. “It was something that we were interested in…For us, it was fun because I think the audience, if they’re familiar with the MCU, knows that Bucky is in Wakanda. It was kind of a hold-off. Our film wasn’t about Bucky, obviously, [so] we didn’t feel like it would be right to deal with him in this context. But we thought it’d be cool for the fans that stayed ’til the end to check in on this character that they love.”

Black Panther is currently enjoyed a bumper opening weekend, where it is looking likely to set a pre-summer record with a four-day opening in excess of $200 million, one of the biggest debuts of all time.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returnsohome to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, John Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Nightshade.
