Scarlett Johansson says Transformers One is “dramatic” and has “so much heart”

Scarlett Johansson has spoken about her voice role in the upcoming animated movie Transformers One, a film that will explore Cybertron’s pre-civil war age and how Optimus Prime and Megatron became sworn enemies. Johansson will play Elita and said Josh Cooley’s script is “dramatic” and has “so much heart.”

Speaking with Collider for her latest film Asteroid City, Johansson was asked about her role in the animated film and how it may differ from previous entries in the Transformers franchise, the most recent of which being Transformers: Rise of the Beasts that was released just a few weeks ago. Of Transformers One Johansson said:

“Yes, I’m playing Elita. I’m working with Josh Cooley, who is an incredible writer-director who I adore and have worked creatively with in another capacity. The film doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before, it looks so cool! The texture of it is so awesome. And because Josh wrote it, it just feels very… I don’t know, it’s got a very dramatic feeling about it. It’s funny, but it’s got so much heart to it like all of his stuff does. I think it’s a different way of approaching this IP. I think it stands on its own, it’s pretty exciting.”

Transformers One will feature the voice talents of Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry (Bullet Train) as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm (Top Gun: Maverick) as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 4) as Alpha Trion.

Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) will direct a script written by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man & The Wasp) with Steven Spielberg producing alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy, Michael Bay, Mark Vahradian and Aaron Dem.

Transformers One is set for release on September 13th, 2024.
