Selena Gomez to develop reimagined Sixteen Candles series for Peacock

March 17, 2022 by Ricky Church

Deadline reports Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) is set to develop 15 Candles, a reimagining of the classic John Hughes coming-of-age comedy Sixteen Candles, for Peacock. Gomez is developing it with Tanya Saracho (Vida) and Gabriela Revilla Lugo (Palm Springs).

15 Candles will follow “four young Latinas starting high school as they overcome their feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind through the lens of the traditional female coming-of-age rite: the quinceañera.”

Saracho and Lugo will write and executive produce the series through Saracho’s Ojalá Production while Gomez will also executive produce through her July Moon Productions company.

The original Sixteen Candles was released in 1984 and served as Hughes’ directorial debut. It starred Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Michael Schoeffling. It became one of the defining teen films of the 80s and launched the careers of Hughes, Ringwald and Hall.

Ringwald and Hall would go on to star in more of Hughes’ films including The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink for Ringwald and Weird Science for Hall, and they were also known to be among the ‘Brat Pack’, a group of young actors who usually starred together in coming of age films. Hughes went on to write and direct several classic comedies such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Home Alone and Uncle Buck.
