Shudder acquires Phil Tippett’s Mad God stop motion animated film

April 3, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Shudder has announced that it has acquired the rights to Mad God, a stop motion animated feature directed by Phil Tippett, the Oscar-winning visual effects genius who credits include the likes of Star Wars, RoboCop and Jurassic Park.

Originally beginning work on the film during production on RoboCop 2, Tippett shelved Mad God after his work on Jurassic Park led him to believe the days of stop motion animation were over. However, he revived the project some 20 years later, finishing the feature with support from Kickstarter backers, and it received its premiere last year at the Locarno Film Festival.

“It’s been over 30 years, but thanks to the team at Tippett Studio we finally made the dream a reality,” said Tippett. “I’m proud to partner with Shudder on the release of Mad God, and it’s an honor that my original vision can now be shared with audiences across the country.”

“In short, Phil Tippett is a genius, and there’s no better home for him and his visionary mind than Shudder,” said Craig Engler, general manager at Shudder. “We’re proud to bring this sure-to-be timeless film to our members.”

Mad God will premiere on Shudder alongside a limited theatrical release on June 16th.
