Sony vs. Dakota Johnson? Studio reportedly angry at actress over Madame Web

March 12, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Aloof is one way to describe Dakota Johnson during the recent press tour for Madame Web. After firing her previous representation when the first trailer dropped, Johnson carried herself in quite the hilarious manner during interviews and on the red carpet.

However, one group that did not find it funny was Sony Pictures, as reports have sprung that the studio was not happy with Johnson and her Madame Web attitude. In a new report from the British tabloid The Daily Mail, there are rumblings that Johnson and Sony Pictures have not met eye-to-eye about her public digs on the movie she was paid to star in and promote.

While she did work hard to cover quite a bit of ground during her promotional tour, Johnson threw a few jabs that the studio has said to have found too low. One insider tells the outlet, “Lots of people at Sony are questioning her star power, and how she reacted to this failure will likely come back to haunt her.”

As we reported, Johnson said she’s not returning for more blockbuster franchise films like this, saying she felt out of place in that world. However, comments like that and a few shady jokes were over the line. The unnamed insider notes, “Dakota’s continued dragging of how she sees the fallout of Madame Web and how she isn’t taking any responsibility for its lackluster results” and said her comments are viewed as a ‘bad look.’

Ironically enough, the same report says the studio has no issue with Dakota’s co-star Sydney Sweeney making ‘playful jokes’ on Saturday Night Live about the film’s box office.

Madame Web has an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and has made $96.6 million since its release. The film is still playing in cinemas.

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders), Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims.
