Stranger Things 4 images hint at darker things to come

In the world of Stranger Things it has only been six months since the Battle of Starcourt Mall, but fans have had to wait almost three years to find out how those events have turned our main characters lives upside down. Well, judging by this set of images released by Netflix today, our nostalgia fuelled kids have done a lot of growing up, with the fourth season looking to deliver more of what creator Ross Duffer calls a “horror movie” vibe.

The Duffer Brothers were speaking to Netflix’s Tudum Publication as they addressed the shift in tone for the 4th season, saying “When we pitched it to Netflix all those years ago, we pitched it as the kids are… The Goonies in E.T., that’s their storyline. And the adults are in Jaws and Close Encounters and then the teens are in A Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween. But, this year, we don’t have the kids. We can’t do The Goonies anymore. And so, suddenly, we’re leaning much harder into that horror movie territory that we love. It was fun to make that change.”

The conversation was part of a larger one to be unveiled during the next episode of Present Company with Krista Smith, where Ross speaks about the fan expectations for Stranger Season 4, saying “I think they’ll be happy when they see it. It’s very, very long, which is why it’s taking us a very long time”.

Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Chief Jim Hopper, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Sadie Sink as Max, Maya Hawke as Robin, Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair and Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman.

New additions to the cast four season four include Robert Englund, Tom Wlaschiha, Sherman Augustus, Mason Dye, Nikola Djuricko, Jamie Campbell Bower, Eduardo Franco, Joseph Quinn, Amybeth McNulty, Myles Truitt, Regina Ting Chen, and Grace Van Dien.

It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1 will premiere on May 27th, while Vol. 2 will follow on July 1st.
