Suicide Squad aiming for PG-13 rating

November 12, 2015 by Gary Collinson

If you were hoping that Warner Bros.’ upcoming supervillain ensemble Suicide Squad could follow Deadpool by aiming for an R-rating, then I’m afraid you’ll be a tad disappointed by comments from producer Charles Roven, who has confirmed to Collider that they are aiming for a PG-13 certificate for the film, and indeed all of the DC Extended Universe movies.

“The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13,” states Roven. “We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”

It’s not really surprising that Warner Bros. is going for PG-13 rating rather than an R, given that the latter would limit its box office potential. Still, it sounds like we can expect the film to push the boundaries of PG-13, which seemed pretty evident from the Comic-Con trailer back in July.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th 2016 and sees David Ayer (Fury) directing a cast that includes Will Smith (Focus) as Deadshot, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Terminator Genisys) as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis (The Help) as Amanda Waller, Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns) as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World) as Killer Croc, Ray Olubowale (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as King Shark, Jay Hernandez (Hostel) as El Diablo, Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers) as Slipknot, Jim Parrack (Fury) as Johnny Frost, Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project) as Hugo Strange, newcomer Karen Fukuhara as Katana, and Common (Selma) and Scott Eastwood (The Longest Ride) in as-yet-unconfirmed roles. Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) also appears in some form in the film as Batman.
