Last month it was reported that Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad was tracking a $125 million domestic opening weekend, but now comes word from The Wrap that the David Ayer-directed film is looking at a three-day haul of between $130 and $140 million.
The previous August record was set by Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, with the Marvel release pulling in $94.3 million. Should Suicide Squad manage to hit the $140 million mark, it would surpass both Deadpool ($132.4 million) and Finding Dory ($135 million) for the third biggest domestic opening of 2016 behind Captain America: Civil War ($179.2 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).
Of course, it remains to be seen whether the mixed reviews will have any impact on its box office success, but we’ll find out this weekend…
