Taika Waititi joins Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy

March 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having starred together in 2011’s Green Lantern, Taika Waititi and Ryan Reynolds are set to reunite this year for the upcoming action comedy Free Guy, with Deadline reporting that the Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker has signed on for a supporting role.

Free Guy is being directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) from a script by Matt Lieberman (Christmas Chronicles) and Zak Penn (Ready Player One) sees Reynolds portraying a bank teller who discovers that he’s actually an NPC – a non-playable background character – in a brutal, open-world action-adventure video game and is actually the only one capable of saving his world.

Also featuring in the cast of the film alongside Reynolds and Waititi are Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brockmire). Filming is set to get underway this April.

Assuming we don’t get a Korg return in Avengers: Endgame, Waititi will next be seen on the big screen alongside Scarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit, which he also writes and directs. He’s also recently been confirmed as lending his voice to the droid bounty hunter IG-88 in Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, and will also write and direct a pilot for a TV adaptation of Terry Gillliam’s Time Bandits.
