Taylor Sheridan to write and direct Comanche epic Empire of the Summer Moon

January 19, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan has taken some time out of his increasing small-screen dominance to option the rights for S.C. Gwynne’s book Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History.

According to Deadline the Sicario and Hell or High Water writer intends to adapt and direct what’s being called a long-standing passion project that depicts the four-decade struggle between the Comanche tribe and white settlers to control the American West. Quanah Parker was considered by many to be its greatest chief.

Author S.C. Gwynne said of the news that “I can’t think of anyone better qualified to bring Empire of the Summer Moonto the screen than Taylor Sheridan,” he continued “He has a deep and nuanced understanding of both the myth and reality of the Old West. I am thrilled that he is undertaking this project.”
