Terence Winter exits HBO’s Vinyl over creative differences

April 9, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

Some shock news for fans of HBO’s hit music drama Vinyl as Deadline is reporting that co-creator and showrunner Terence Winter has left the show due to creative differences.

Winter is to be replaced by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) as showrunner, while Max Borenstein (Godzilla) joins as executive producer after his work on Fox’s Minority Report TV series. Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese will remain on the show as fellow executive producers it seems.

HBO said in a statement on the changes: “As we head into the second season of Vinyl, we have decided it is an appropriate time to make a change in the creative direction of the show… We have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Terry Winter at HBO on projects from The Sopranos to Boardwalk Empire to Vinyl, and we look forward to our next collaboration with him. We are pleased to welcome Scott Z. Burns, executive producer and showrunner, and Max Borenstein, executive producer, as the new team helming the show.”

The drama, which carries a big budget, has had decent but soft ratings during its first season, with viewers between 760,000 and 570,000 during its premiere. However, it has been praised by critics and has already been commissioned for a second season.

Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man) leads the show as Richie Finestra, “a record label president who is desperately trying to save his company and his soul without destroying everyone in his path.” Olivia Wilde (Meadowland), Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), Ato Essandoh (Garden State), P.J. Byrne (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Max Casella (Inside Llewyn Davis) co-star.

Vinyl is brodcast on Sky Atalantic in the UK.
