Terry Gilliam says he hates superheroes and urges fans to “grow up”

Lauded filmmaker Terry Gilliam has slammed superhero movies in a new interview, saying that he hates the genre and telling fans of spandex-clad stars that they should “grow up”.

Gilliam spoke to CineNando about his new film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, which finally screened for the first time at this year’s Cannes Film Festival after decades in development hell.

He was asked how the film fits into a world dominated by superhero movies.

Gilliam said: “I hate superheroes. It’s bullshit. Come on, grow up! We’re not going to be teenagers for the rest of our lives. It’s great to dream of great powers. Superheroes are all about power. That’s what I don’t like about superheroes. They’ve gotta beat the other powerful superheroes. Come on, a bit of peace, love, and understanding is what we need.”

His comments might come as something of a surprise given Gilliam was once attached to direct the comic book movie Watchmen, before Zack Snyder ultimately took the reins. Gilliam had declared the material “unfilmable”.

The director’s own film is in a precarious situation once again as The Man Who Killed Don Quixote lost the distribution support of Amazon during legal controversy prior to its Cannes premiere.

The film itself debuted to mixed reviews, currently sitting at a 55% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
