That ’70s Show attempts another spin-off, this time with That ’90s Show

October 9, 2021 by EJ Moreno

History repeats itself, and we’re see that with another spin-off from That ’70s Show.

Many will remember the extremely short-lived series That ’80s Show, which premiered in 2002 and only lasted 13 episodes. Well, original series creators Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner are teaming with their daughter Lindsey Turner for a new series called That ’90s Show. They are returning as writers and executive producers for the upcoming project. Gregg Mettler will also serve on the writing team in addition to serving as showrunner and executive producer.

The biggest catch here and why this could work for fans and critics alike: Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, who played parents Red and Kitty Forman in the original series, will star in That ’90s Show. The fan-favorite couple will return to their roles, but the story of the series is a bit different from the original.

In That ’90s Show, we’re in 1995, and Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, visits her grandparents for the summer. She’ll bond with a whole new generation of Point Place, WI, kids while also dealing with her grandparents Kitty and Red.

No word on if any other original cast members will return for That ’90s Show. Can they do a series about Eric and Donna’s daughter without showing them? Only time will tell.

Netflix has ordered ten episodes of the multi-cam sitcom. At the time of writing, there’s no set release date for the series.
