The Duffer Brothers’ Death Note series finds its showrunner

October 22, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Halia Abdel-Meguid is heading to the Upside Down with the Duffers and cooking up a new Death Note series as Deadine reports that she will write and executive produce Death Note, a live-action series adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime series.

The project comes from Upside Down, the production company of Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer. We previously reported on the Duffers’ new company, launched as part of their overall deal with Netflix.

Per Deadline, the Death Note series will initial focus on a bright teenager who discovers a mysterious black notebook that gives him supernatural power over life and death, the latter caused by writing a person’s name in the book. The teen becomes intoxicated with power as he decides to cleanse the world of undesirables, as a law enforcement team tries to stop him.

Deadline notes that Abdel-Meguid is a long-time Death Note fan, enjoying both the anime series and the original manga. She speaks Japanese and looks to bring Death Note to Netflix in another new way, not unlike the 2017 Netflix film.

As for her production background, Abdel-Meguid wrote on Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Devil in the White City. She is also a writing consultant on the Duffers’ adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.
