UPDATE: The Girl in the Spider’s Web gets a title change

September 25, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

UPDATE: We’ve had confirmation that the film hasn’t actually changed its title, and remains just The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Original story follows…

Last week, Sony Pictures unveiled a couple of new posters for its upcoming The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo sequel The Girl in the Spider’s Web, complete with the tagline “A New Dragon Tattoo Story”.

Well, as confirmed by Sony’s press kit, it seems that isn’t a tagline after all, as the studio has taken a leaf of out Lucasfilm’s book and the film is now officially going by the title The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story.

One would have to assume that Sony is looking to make it clear to general audiences that Spider’s Web is part of the Millennium series, given that original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are both absent this time around.

Still, surely a tagline on the poster and trailer could have accomplished that?

Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller. Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, the star of “The Crown,” will play the outcast vigilante defender under the direction of Fede Alvarez, the director of 2016’s breakout thriller Don’t Breathe; the screenplay adaptation is by Steven Knight and Fede Alvarez & Jay Basu.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is set for release on November 9th in the States and on November 21st in the UK.
