The Hunger Games stays strong at the top while Napoleon conquers Disney’s Wish at the box office

November 27, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was the Thanksgiving victor over the weekend, securing top spot with an impressive hold of $42 million, and in doing so fending off the dual challenge of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Disney’s centenary celebration offering Wish.

Following a soft opening weekend of just $44.6 million, the Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth headlined prequel dropped just -35% in its sophomore frame, earning $28.8 million over the weekend, and $42 million over the five-day holiday period. Through Sunday The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes stood at almost $100 million domestically and $197.3 million worldwide.

The real box-office battle could be found in the places below top spot, where Ridley Scott’s biographical epic Napoleon faced a foe 100 years in the making in the form of Disney’s Wish, and it was an outcome few would have predicted as the two films faced off.

Thanksgiving is a period traditionally dominated by the Mouse House, but nobody told Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix, because Napoleon marched off with $32.5 million over the five-day period, consigning Wish to a third placed finish with just $19.7 million for the three days and $31.7 million during the holiday corridor.

Following The Marvels box-office capitulation, which plummeted to sixth place this weekend ($9.2 million) for a domestic total of $76 million, a figure that suggests it won’t even get over the $100 million mark, Disney will be hoping that Wish has enough magic to carry it through the next few weeks and perform in a similar way to Elemental and Encanto.
