The New Mutants features a same-sex love story between Maisie Williams’ Wolsfbane and Blu Hunt’s Mirage

March 10, 2020 by EJ Moreno

After years of waiting for the release of The New Mutants, director Josh Boone is finally opening up about the journey and some of the film’s more important details. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Boone has revealed that while the film is described as supernatural horror, there’s “a beautiful love story” at the center of the film, “which I know is a weird thing to hear”.

Boone confirms that the story he penned with screenwriter Knate Lee features a same-sex relationship between Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams) and Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt): “It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”

“Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality,” actress Maisie Williams explains. “If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.” Williams clarifies the relationship is “not something that is spoken about too much in the film”, but that’s also why she loved it as it didn’t feel like a “gimmick.”

“It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality,” Williams continues. “It’s not centered around that, and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either, and no one really questions it.”
