Thomas Haden Church claims Sandman/Spider-Man return has been discussed with Marvel and Sony

March 31, 2023 by EJ Moreno

There was a small taste of Sandman in live-action Spider-Man movies, but there’s room for more if you ask actor Thomas Haden Church.

After a small role in the fan-favorite 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Church gave fans a small tease of a return, but the film sometimes relied on reusing older footage. It’s long overdue for this actor and this comic book character to get his shine.

In a new interview with The DisInsider, Church gives his take on more Sandman in future installments. Church tells the publication a return is something “that’s been discussed.”

He implies he has unfinished business with the Spider-Man films, especially after having scenes cut from Spider-Man: No Way Home. We had a whole story involving his daughter for No Way Home, and it just ended up [cut]. There was just so much going on…Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige], we all had a lot of conversations,” says Church.

He adds, “And I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into a future iteration of it. The conversation has happened about him coming back and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story and being not just Sandman.”

Neither Sony nor Marvel Studios have officially greenlit another Spider-Man film at the time of writing although Kevin Feige has confirmed that a story is in place for Spidey’s next MCU adventure(s).

Thomas Haden Church is currently filming Horizon, written and directed by Kevin Costner. You can see him next in Peacock’s Twisted Metal, where he’ll star as Agent Stone.

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Angourie Rice (Betty Brandt), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Jason Ionello), Benedict Wong (Wong), J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), J.B. Smoove (Mr. Dell), Hannibal Buress (Coach Wilson), Jamie Foxx (Electro), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), and Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin).
