Tom Holland claims Spider-Man 3 is “the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made”

February 4, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Another Marvel movie, another slice of hyperbole claiming it to be the greatest thing since the last one, and this time it has come from a man who was in arguably the most complex comic book jigsaw puzzle of all time, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame: Spider-Man himself Tom Holland, who has called the forthcoming threequel “the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made”.

Speaking to Variety about his forthcoming reunion with The Russo Brothers on dark character study Cherry, Holland was asked what he could tell them about Spider-Man 3, and rather than revert to type and drop huge spoilers, he decided to ratchet up the hype, stating:

“I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.”

Holland is an excitable chap, so we could just put this down to his infectious enthusiasm, but with all the talk of Doctor Strange and Multiverse cameos, it might actually turn out to be a superhero movie quite like any other. The Untitled Spider-Man Sequel is slated for release on December 17th 2021 and sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson).
