The Week in Spandex – Avengers: Infinity War update, Scarlett Johansson on Black Widow movie, Spider-Man spinoffs, Justice League images, Agent Carter return

October 15, 2016 by Gary Collinson

…During NYCC, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb spoke about the chances of a crossover between The Defenders and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., stating that: “t’s a fair question, and the fair answer is… stay tuned,” said Loeb, when asked when S.H.I.E.L.D. will “notice what’s going on in Hell’s Kitchen. I get in trouble every single time I say this, which is #ItsAllConnected. But trust me when I say #ItsAllConnected and that’s about all I can say on it at this time. One of the things that’s a challenge and it’s unlike the movie studio because the movie studio is making all of the movies for one place and that’s the theaters. The theater owners don’t get to say well we don’t want Spider-Man to be in Captain America — in that particular case Sony and Marvel had to work that out so that could happen. But in the case of what we do, we have networks to consider and that’s a conversation [for] ABC and Netflix — and now we have shows at Hulu and Freeform and FX [as well]. So it just becomes a question of once it starts, what have we unleashed? But it’s certainly a topic of conversation…”

…Loeb was also asked whether we might see Gabriel Luna’s Ghost Rider getting his own spinoff from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: “Obviously, whenever we set out with any of our characters we hope they pop, we hope they connect with the audience. In this particular case, it was a combination of three things — really good writing on the part of our staff, a young actor who is both committed to the role and also is not just a visual effect — he is, in the role of Robbie Reyes, connecting with the audience in a very special way — and the third thing is the fact that this is one of those iconic characters that we really hope can grow. Whether or not he spins out or takes off or sticks around – that would fall firmly under the category of you have to wait and see…”

…Be sure to read Ben Rayner’s review of this week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ‘Uprising’ here, and take a look at a promo and a couple of clips for this coming Tueday’s ‘Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire’ here and here, while we’ve also got a synopsis for the fifth episode ‘Lockup’ here, as well as a batch of images here. Meanwhile, LEGO fans may be interested to hear that the concept for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ‘Bus’ set has achieved the required 10,000 supporters to move through to the review stage in the hopes of being produced as an official set; you can check out some images of the rather impressive concept here…

…Moving on to Marvel Animation now and the NYCC panel offered up a few pieces of news, the biggest of which may be Hayley Atwell’s return as Agent Carter for a guest role in Avengers: Secret Wars, the upcoming rebrand of Avengers Assemble / Avengers: Ultron Revolution. Atwell is set to lend her voice to Peggy for an episode where she and Howard Stark team up with Iron Man and Captain America to battle Kang the Conqueror. Look for it in 2017…

…Also coming in 2017 is a brand new Spidey series to replace Ultimate Spider-Man, which is set to conclude after its fourth season. Titled simply Spider-Man, the new series has been developed by Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Philip Pignotto (Avengers Assemble) and will take the wall-crawler back to his roots, focussing “ on insecure yet courageous teenager Peter Parker as he learns that with great power comes great responsibility — especially when you get the strange abilities of a spider…”

…The Marvel Animation panel also brought confirmation that the new series of Ant-Man shorts will hit Disney XD next year, with Josh Keaton (Batman: Arkham Origins) voicing Ant-Man and Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) as The Wasp…

…After officially announcing the animated movie Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell last week, Marvel has now unveiled the first clip from the feature, which sees the Green Goliath teaming with Doctor Strange and the Howling Commandos to do battle against Nightmare. Check out the clip here ahead of the movie’s release on Digital HD on October 21st…

…We’re still waiting on the first trailer for Logan, but this week has brought us a look at Boyd Holbrook’s villain Pierce – thought to be the cyborg Donald Pierce [see here] and an image of a mystery character in a white suit and bow-tie, prompting speculation that he’s the Marvel supervillain Arcade [see here], along with some storyboards featuring Wolverine leaping into action against a speeding car [see here]…

…With X-Men: Apocalypse receiving its home-entertainment release this month, Screen Junkies has released an Honest Trailer for the Bryan Singer-directed superhero sequel, which you can watch here…

…FX has released a new promo for its upcoming X-Men series Legion [watch it here], while it’s also been announced that Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement is set to appear in a recurring role, although his character details are being kept under wraps…

…It looks like Warner Bros. may have added two new DC movies to its slate this week, with the studio announcing release dates for September 27th 2019 and February 7th 2020. Assuming they are DC movies, that means Warner Bros. has dates for four as-yet-unrevealed movies, which may well be The Batman, Dark Universe (a.k.a. Justice League Dark), Harley Quinn and Man of Steel 2…

…With Justice League moving to Iceland for its final few days of filming, Zack Snyder took to Twitter to share the first official image of Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis, which you can see here along with a couple of pieces of concept art. Meanwhile, we also got a pair of new images of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman; check those out here…

…This week brought us an international trailer for Wonder Woman featuring a few snippets of previously unseen footage [watch it here], while TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter revealed that scheduling conflicts prevented her from making a cameo in the movie, and Gal Gadot spoke about the recent announcement that the Amazon Princess is bisexual in the comic book canon: “It’s not something we’ve explored [in the movies]. It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense. In this movie she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.” Gadot also talked about director Patty Jenkins’ vision for the movie, and you can read the rest of her comments here…

…Stills photographer Clay Enos shared a new behind-the-scenes image from Suicide Squad, which shows Jared Leto hanging around – literally – on the set of the supervillain ensemble…

…Continue on below for Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Arrow, Gotham, Krypton, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Incognito and more…
