The Week in Spandex – Batman v Superman, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, X-Men, Deadpool, Gambit, Justice League Dark, Superman Lives, Heroes Reborn and more

July 4, 2015 by Gary Collinson

…Ahead of Friday’s Marvel Television Presents panel, a SDCC poster has arrived online for the second season of Agent Carter, and it’s also been confirmed that James D’Arcy (Edwin Jarvis) and Enver Gjokaj (Agent Daniel Sousa) will return alongside Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, with Chad Michael Murray (Agent Jack Thompson), Bridget Regan (Dottie Underwood) and Lyndsy Fonseca (Angie Martinelli) also said to be close to signing on to return. Meanwhile, details have also emerged of two new characters in “Hollywood starlet” Wendy Fallon, and the “charming oddball scientist” Dr. Henry (who is surely Hank Pym, right?)…

…On the Marvel animation front, this Sunday sees the return of Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors to Disney XD, and we’ve got a clip from Avengers Assemble’s ‘Terminal Velocity’ which you can watch here, as well as a clip from Ultimate Spider-Man’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy’ here…

…Of course, given Marvel’s recent deal with Sony and the subsequent casting of Tom Holland as the web-slinger, Kevin Feige couldn’t avoid Spider-Man questions during his Ant-Man promotional interviews, and the Marvel chief spent some time this week addressing how they plan to integrate Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as speaking about the “John Hughes vibe” for the 2017 solo movie, and how the reboot will differ from the previous films with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield…

…Over at 20th Century Fox and the studio has continued its marketing push for Fantastic Four by releasing three new TV spots packed with previously-unseen footage from the Josh Trank-helmed reboot [watch them here, here and here], as well as a new image of Mister Fantastic (Miles Teller), Human Torch (Michael B. Jordan), Invisible Woman (Kate Mara) and a stark naked Thing (Jamie Bell) [see here]…

…The Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit Blu-ray on July 14th, and Fox has ramped up the promotion this week, showcasing the additional footage from the extended edition with a trailer and four clips [see here, here and here], along with a new image of Rogue (Anna Paquin) alongside Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) [see here]…

…With Fox currently deep in production on the X-Men: Days of Future Past follow-up X-Men: Apocalypse, we got some new concept art from the May 2016 release, while Bryan Singer posted a tease for Oscar Isaac’s titular villain with his latest behind-the-scenes set snap and Olivia Munn also posted a video of her demonstrating her sword-weilding skills in preparation for her role as Psylocke…

…As well as unloading Batman v Superman images in its Comic-Con issue, Entertainment Weekly also released the first official still from February’s X-Men spin-off Deadpool with a shot of Ryan Reynolds fully suited up as the Merc with a Mouth [check it out here], while yesterday brought us another couple of images, including one featuring Deadpool alongside Brianna Hildebrand’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead [see here]…

…Channing Tatum has also given an update on his own X-Men spinoff Gambit, which is set to be directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes): “It’s all being worked on at the moment. I’m from the south, so I know who to go to to find the accent. But I haven’t found ‘the guy’ yet, because generally that’s how I do accents. Like, I’ll find the person that I want to sound like and not just do a generic Cajun accent. So I haven’t found ‘the guy’ yet but the cards are always… they’re right there, actually.” Producer Reid Carolin was also asked how the movie will integrate into the wider X-Men universe, deflecting the question with the response: “You know, I think that’s sort of an evolving conversation – we’re kind of figuring that out as we go. But this is a standalone movie and it’s the story of Gambit and we’ll probably gradually integrate that character into the X-Men universe as we go. And as far as what characters from the X-Men universe make it into the movie — we’re not exactly sure yet, so we’re figuring it out. It’s still at the script stage…”

…NBC has been unveiling the cast of its Heroes event series Heroes Reborn, releasing character motion posters for Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman), Malina (Danika Yarosh), Carlos (Ryan Guzman), Molly (Francesca Eastwood), Joanne (Judith Shekoni), Tommy (Robbie Kay), Miko (Kiki Sukezane), Luke (Zachary Levi), Emily (Gatlin Green), Erica (Rya Kihlstedt) and Quentin (Henry Zebrowski); check them out here, here, here and here…

…And finally, a first poster has arrived online for Legendary’s upcoming webseries Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, a reboot of the 70s superhero TV show, which is set to star YouTubers Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart as the female crime-fighting duo. Take a look at the poster here.
